This simple version of harissa, the classic North African sauce is real quick to make.

It can be served as a dip with wedges of Middle Eastern flat bread.

As a condiment with couscous and other North African dishes.

Or flavoring to spice up meat and vegetable stews.

1/2-1 tsp
cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp
ground cumin
juice of 1/2 lemon

How to Make Harissa


  • 1Put the paprika, cayenne pepper, ground cumin and 1 cup water in a large heavy pan.
  • 2Bring the spice mixture to a boil, then immediately remove the pan from the heat.
  • 3Stir in the lemon juice to taste and allow to cool completely before serving or using.
