4 lb
ground beef chuck
2 Tbsp
olive oil
4 medium
onions, finely chopped
4 can(s)
tomato paste, 6 ounces each
garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp
mixed pickling spice
1 c
dry white wine
1 Tbsp
freshly ground pepper

How to Make Greek-Style Meat Sauce


  • 1Using a large frying pan, brown meat in 1 tablespoon olive oil until it loses its pink color.
  • 2Transfer to crockery pot.
  • 3Add remaining olive oil to pan.
  • 4Saute onions until glazed.
  • 5Transfer to crockery pot.
  • 6Add tomato paste, garlic, pickling spice, (put in a tea ball or tie in a cheesecloth bag), wine, salt and pepper.
  • 7Cover.
  • 8Cook on low 8 hours.
  • 9Stir once or twice.
  • 10Cool slightly.
  • 11Ladle into freezer containers, or serve hot.
  • 12Makes about 3 quarts.
  • 13NOTE: This meat sauce is great for various dishes: spaghetti, moussaka, and the greek mararoni dish, Pastitsio.
  • 14It is also good spooned over tacos or ladled inside avocado half shells.
  • 15This recipe makes a large quantity and freezes well.
