olive oil

onion, chopped
1/2 tsp
garlic cloves, minced
1 small
green bell pepper, diced
12 oz
tomato puree
6 oz
tomato paste
2 tsp
dried oregano
1 tsp
dried basil
1 Tbsp
dried parsley
1 tsp
1/4 tsp
1/4 c
parmesan cheese, grated

How to Make Gina's Basic Spaghetti Sauce


  • 1Prepare the tomatoes: drop them into a pot of boiling water for about a minute.
  • 2Drain and rinse with cold water.
  • 3Slip off the skins, cut out the "core", and coarsely chop.
  • 4Set aside.
  • 5In a large pot, heat the oil. Add onion and fennel seed.
  • 6Fry for a couple of minutes.
  • 7Add the pepper and garlic and fry a couple more minutes.
  • 8Add the rest of the ingredients.
  • 9Bring to a boil, lower heat, then simmer for as long as you can (at least an hour), stirring occasionally.
  • 10I cover the pot loosely when simmering.
