With all the great recipes that my Grandma Bush had using tomato soup I had to find an alternative to using canned soup. I have used this with several of her recipes with great success. My husband couldn't tell the difference. Now that is a passed test.

1 cup or 1 can condensed soup


  • 3 Tbsp
    butter, unsalted or olive oil, extra virgin
  • 3 Tbsp
    unbleached white flour
  • 1/4 tsp
    kosher salt
  • dash(es)
    freshly ground black pepper
  • dash(es)
    garlic powder with parsley
  • dash(es)
    onion powder
  • dash(es)
    freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 1/4 c
    tomato juice, home-canned if available

How to Make DIY Cream of Tomato Soup


  1. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and seasonings. Cook over medium heat until it bubbles and the raw flour taste is gone.
  2. Add tomato juice, stirring with a wire whisk to prevent lumps. Cook until thick.
