With all the great recipes that my Grandma Bush had using tomato soup I had to find an alternative to using canned soup. I have used this with several of her recipes with great success. My husband couldn't tell the difference. Now that is a passed test.

1 cup or 1 can condensed soup


Add to Grocery List

3 Tbsp
butter, unsalted or olive oil, extra virgin
3 Tbsp
unbleached white flour
1/4 tsp
kosher salt
freshly ground black pepper
garlic powder with parsley
onion powder
freshly grated nutmeg
1 1/4 c
tomato juice, home-canned if available

How to Make DIY Cream of Tomato Soup


  • 1Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and seasonings. Cook over medium heat until it bubbles and the raw flour taste is gone.
  • 2Add tomato juice, stirring with a wire whisk to prevent lumps. Cook until thick.
