I plan to use this recipe for our Easter ham. Our family from Lexington, KY are coming to visit... so it seemed appropriate. :)

Blue Ribbon Recipe

A delicious ham glaze that will make any holiday meal special. We loved the flavor bourbon gives the glaze. It's faint, but there. Same thing with the cayenne. The spice is not overpowering. The thick, sweet glaze is a wonderful contrast with the salty ham. Once cooked, the glaze is sticky and sweet with beautiful color and caramelizes beautifully on the baked ham. How to Make Bourbon Honey Ham Glaze

Test Kitchen Tips
We recommend lining the roasting pan with foil and also putting the ham on a rack to cool. The glaze is thick and can burn on the bottom of the pan.

Step-by-Step

  1. Place ham on a baking pan, fat side up.
  2. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 15 minutes per pound or follow package directions.
  3. While ham is baking, in a saucepan combine the bourbon and apple juice. Bring to a boil. Cook over medium to medium-high heat until reduced to about 1/2 cup.
  4. Remove from heat and add brown sugar, honey, and cayenne pepper. Stir to form a paste.
  5. Remove the ham from the oven about 30 minutes before it is finished cooking. Score the ham, if it is not already scored. You just want to slice through the very outer layer of the ham to help the glaze soak in.
  6. Rub the paste all over the top and sides of the ham.
  7. Bake 20-30 minutes more or until the glaze is glossy and darkened. Let ham sit a few minutes before slicing.
