Not even sure where I happened to come across this recipe, but I was looking for a tomato sauce for my stuffed cabbage rolls. My DH said this was the only sauce he ever wanted me to use {he says that about a lot of the things I cook, LOL}. This works great for cabbage rolls, stuffed green peppers, or pretty much any casserole/hotdish/goulash that needs a red sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 can 8oz tomato sauce
  • 1 can 6oz tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce {more is not a bad thing, a teaspoon is a starting point}
  • 1 can 28oz tomatoes
  • 1-3 - whole bay leaves

How To Make best ever tomato sauce

  • Step 1
    Mix all together and cook out the flavor of the canned tomato products.
  • Step 2
    Can cut a carrot into sticks & replace the brown sugar. Adds a deeper richer flavor & tends to stick/burn less than the sugar does. Tastes great too if you want to eat the softened cooked carrot.
  • Step 3
    Bay leaves can be ground up in a spice/coffee grinder & added to the sauce in place of the whole leaf(s).
