This is a traditional Texas style barbecue sauce that is excellent for brushing on grilling meat or serving as a sauce You can control the spiciness by increasing or decreasing the chili powder (we like ours spicier)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 3 tablespoons dry mustard
  • 4 tablespoons do it yourself chili powder (link in comments)
  • 2 cups tomato catsup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons (heaping) brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1 to 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • - salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons liquid smoke (optional)

How To Make barbecue sauce (sallye)

  • Step 1
    Peel and quarter onion Peel garlic cloves Place in food processor and pulse until minced finely
  • Step 2
    Melt butter in a heavy sauce pan over medium high heat Add onions and garlic Saute until onions and garlic are translucent (about 5 minutes) Stir frequently to avoid burning
  • Step 3
    While onion/garlic mixture is cooking, combine all other ingredients in mixing bowl Whisk briskly until well blended
  • Step 4
    Pour liquid over onions/garlic in saucepan and bring to a boil Reduce heat and simmer for 15-30 minutes until sauce is thickened Stir frequently to avoid sticking and/or burning
  • Step 5
    Brush over grilled meat during and after cooking.
