This is a traditional Texas style barbecue sauce that is excellent for brushing on grilling meat or serving as a sauce You can control the spiciness by increasing or decreasing the chili powder (we like ours spicier)

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 medium onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 3 tablespoons dry mustard
- 4 tablespoons do it yourself chili powder (link in comments)
- 2 cups tomato catsup
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons (heaping) brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional)
- 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
- 1 to 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- - salt & pepper to taste
- 1 to 2 tablespoons liquid smoke (optional)

Step 1Peel and quarter onion Peel garlic cloves Place in food processor and pulse until minced finely

Step 2Melt butter in a heavy sauce pan over medium high heat Add onions and garlic Saute until onions and garlic are translucent (about 5 minutes) Stir frequently to avoid burning

Step 3While onion/garlic mixture is cooking, combine all other ingredients in mixing bowl Whisk briskly until well blended

Step 4Pour liquid over onions/garlic in saucepan and bring to a boil Reduce heat and simmer for 15-30 minutes until sauce is thickened Stir frequently to avoid sticking and/or burning

Step 5Brush over grilled meat during and after cooking.
