This is a traditional Texas style barbecue sauce that is excellent for brushing on grilling meat or serving as a sauce

You can control the spiciness by increasing or decreasing the chili powder (we like ours spicier)

Stove Top


  • 1/2 c
  • 1 medium
  • 2 clove
  • 3 Tbsp
    dry mustard
  • 4 Tbsp
    do it yourself chili powder (link in comments)
  • 2 c
    tomato catsup
  • 1/2 c
    apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp
    (heaping) brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp
    honey (optional)
  • 2 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1 to 2 c
  • 1 Tbsp
    lemon juice
  • ·
    salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp
    liquid smoke (optional)



  1. Peel and quarter onion

    Peel garlic cloves

    Place in food processor and pulse until minced finely
  2. Melt butter in a heavy sauce pan over medium high heat

    Add onions and garlic

    Saute until onions and garlic are translucent (about 5 minutes)

    Stir frequently to avoid burning
  3. While onion/garlic mixture is cooking, combine all other ingredients in mixing bowl

    Whisk briskly until well blended
  4. Pour liquid over onions/garlic in saucepan and bring to a boil

    Reduce heat and simmer for 15-30 minutes until sauce is thickened

    Stir frequently to avoid sticking and/or burning
  5. Brush over grilled meat during and after cooking.
