Since I do not live in the Carolinas, I do not know if this is genuine or not. I am sure someone will be kind enough to tell me as I know BBQ sauce is pretty sacred! It is just the name of the recipe I got from my sister in law. I have tweeked it a bit from hers to suit my own tastes. It is tangy and spicy from the mustard, vinegar, and chipotle seasoning and just a bit sweet. Delicious with pork, beef, or chicken. Can use as a marinade too.

How to Make Carolina BBQ Sauce

Step-by-Step

  1. Add all ingredients except butter in a heavy saucepan. Stir to combine.
  2. Cook on very low heat for about 15 minutes stirring occassionally.
  3. Add butter cut into a few pieces and stir until melted and combined. Let cool to room temperature before serving so flavors can develop.
  4. Add hot sauce or more chipotle if you would like more heat. Do not omit the step with the butter. It gives the sauce a sheen and richness.
