Carolina BBQ Sauce

Since I do not live in the Carolinas, I do not know if this is genuine or not. I am sure someone will be kind enough to tell me as I know BBQ sauce is pretty sacred! It is just the name of the recipe I got from my sister in law. I have tweeked it a bit from hers to suit my own tastes. It is tangy and spicy from the mustard, vinegar, and chipotle seasoning and just a bit sweet. Delicious with pork, beef, or chicken. Can use as a marinade too.

2 c
1/2 c
spicy brown mustard
1/2 c
cider vinegar
2/3 c
firmly packed brown sugar
2 Tbsp
dried, minced onion
1 Tbsp
worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp
dried chipotle pepper (i got this at target) or hot pepper flakes
3 Tbsp
butter or margarine
hot sauce of your choice or more chipotle if desired for more heat

How to Make Carolina BBQ Sauce


  • 1Add all ingredients except butter in a heavy saucepan. Stir to combine.
  • 2Cook on very low heat for about 15 minutes stirring occassionally.
  • 3Add butter cut into a few pieces and stir until melted and combined. Let cool to room temperature before serving so flavors can develop.
  • 4Add hot sauce or more chipotle if you would like more heat. Do not omit the step with the butter. It gives the sauce a sheen and richness.
