Recipe came from Bethany's 3rd Edition from Bethany UMC, Franklinville, NC, was submitted in memory of Frances Coward. I really love the spices used in this recipe...love it on bagels, muffins, biscuits or toast..

Ingredients

  • 6 pounds apples
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla flavor (optional)

How To Make frances coward's apple butter

  • Step 1
    WASH & QUARTER APPLES. ADD WATER AND COOK UNTIL SOFT. STRAIN THROUGH FOOD MILL.
  • Step 2
    COMBINE APPLE PULP, SUGAR AND VINEGAR. COOK UNTIL THICK; ABOUT 45 MINUTES.
  • Step 3
    ADD SPICES AND VANILLA, IF DESIRED. POUR INTO HOT JARS.
  • Step 4
    PROCESS IN HOT WATER BATH FOR 10 MINUTES. MAKES ABOUT 3 PINTS.
