These butters aren't loaded with sugar, and are great slathered on warm buttermilk biscuits. They're also good with smoked sausages and other meats, also. Fruit butters are so easy to make. You can make them ahead of time and stored in the fridge for at least a week. Serve them chilled or warm them slightly in a pan or in the micro for a fresher more homemade flavor.Source: Unknown

Ingredients

  • - 2 lbs. cooking apples or pears, peeled and cored
  • - 1 cinnamon stick
  • - 1 cup brown sugar
  • - grated zest of 1 lemon
  • - 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
  • - apple juice

How To Make apple or pear butter

  • Step 1
    In a heavy pan, mix the fruit, cinnamon stick, brown sugar, lemon zest and cloves Add enough apple juice just to cover and bring it to a simmer. Cook, uncovered, til fruit is soft, 15 to 30 minutes. Strain off any excess juices and remove the cinnamon stick.
  • Step 2
    Mash by hand for a chunky butter or in a food processor for a smooth butter.
