Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp
    butter
  • 1/4 c
    finely chopped yellow onion
  • 1 clove
    garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    dried thyme leaves
  • 1/8 tsp
    salt
  • 1 dash(es)
    black pepper
  • 2/3 c
    lower-sodium beef broth

How to Make Onion Herb Sauce

Step-by-Step

  1. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over moderate heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes or until onion is tender.
  2. Stir in flour,thyme,salt and pepper. Cook the mixture, stirring constantly, for 10 minutes or until flour is browned. Important not to burn just brown.
  3. Add the beef broth. Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture starts to thicken.Cook and stir for 2 minutes more or until thickened. If you prefer a smoother sauce, strain through a sieve and discard the onion pulp. Serve sauce with meat and poultry. Makes 2/3 cup.
