homemade mushroom gravy

This is the recipe I have been making for a long time - don't remember exactly where I got it- I think it was my Aunt Martha.

yield Makes 2 cups.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh or canned mushrooms
  • 4 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk or beef stock
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 large egg yolks, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

How To Make homemade mushroom gravy

  • Step 1
    Brown mushrooms in butter; add flour and blend. Add milk or stock, salt, pepper,and nutmeg; cook until thick. Stir slowly into the beaten egg yolks and add lemon juice; cook, stirring constantly until thick, about 2 minutes. Serve hot. --- Note: You can use water, milk,stock, cream or sour cream for the liquid milk or beef stock or a combination of of these.
