A simple sauce or pudding, Wojapi can be made with strawberries, blueberries, huckleberries, blackberries, elderberries, gooseberries, or other berries that may be in season, or a mix. You can use fresh or frozen berries. You can thicken it if you want it as thick as pudding, and/or sweeten it with sugar, honey, maple syrup, or another sweetener of your choice. I got this recipe from the same website where I found the fry bread recipe. I've halved the amounts from what was given.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 pounds berries of choice, fresh or frozen
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar or other sweetener (adjust amt)
  • corn starch, as needed to thicken

How To Make wojape/wojapi (lakota berry sauce)

  • Step 1
    In a 5-qt pot, mash berries with a masher. Add sweetener, if using, and water.
  • Step 2
    Boil lightly for 20 minutes. Thicken with corn starch that has been dissolved in cold water.
