This is a recipe I often make in the summer when my pear trees over produces. The recipe can easily be increased if you want to can for the winter. I also make this in the winter when I buy too many pears and they get over ripe. You can easily leave the sugar out for a low calorie version. With all the spices and sweetness of the pears you will never miss the sugar.

Ingredients

  • 5 - ripe pears, overly ripe work well
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

How To Make pear butter

  • Step 1
    Peel, core and roughly chop pears.
  • Step 2
    Place in a heavy saucepan with remaining ingredients.
  • Step 3
    Cook until pears are softened and blended with spices. Stir often.
  • Step 4
    Serve warm or chilled. Will keep for several weeks in refrigerator in tightly sealed container.
