Everybody has their favorite version of cranberry sauce! Jellied or whole-it's always on the Thanksgiving table! It really is a very versatile side, it goes great with a turkey dinner, but just as well with ham. Cranberry sauce is a great condiment on sandwiches as well. My family loves my "kicked up" version that includes port wine and toasted walnuts! I always have to double the recipe!

1 lb
cranberries, fresh (you can freeze the bag and use them frozen)
1 1/3 c
1 1/3 c
2-4 Tbsp
ruby port
1/4 c
toasted walnuts, chopped

How to Make Kicked Up Cranberry Sauce

  • 1Toast walnuts on stovetop in a saute pan in one layer using medium low heat until walnuts are slightly golden and fragrant. Let cool and chop.
  • 2Boil sugar and water until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add cranberries and bring back to the boil. Simmer gently until the cranberries begin to pop, about 10 minutes.
  • 3Add port wine (to taste) while still warm, heat will evaporate alcohol. Let cool. Add walnuts. Store in an airtight container. Can be made up to 2 days ahead.
