Everybody has their favorite version of cranberry sauce! Jellied or whole-it's always on the Thanksgiving table! It really is a very versatile side, it goes great with a turkey dinner, but just as well with ham. Cranberry sauce is a great condiment on sandwiches as well. My family loves my "kicked up" version that includes port wine and toasted walnuts! I always have to double the recipe!

  • 1 lb
cranberries, fresh (you can freeze the bag and use them frozen)
  • 1 1/3 c
    water
  • 1 1/3 c
    sugar
  • 2-4 Tbsp
    ruby port
  • 1/4 c
    toasted walnuts, chopped

How to Make Kicked Up Cranberry Sauce

Step-by-Step

  1. Toast walnuts on stovetop in a saute pan in one layer using medium low heat until walnuts are slightly golden and fragrant. Let cool and chop.
  2. Boil sugar and water until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add cranberries and bring back to the boil. Simmer gently until the cranberries begin to pop, about 10 minutes.
  3. Add port wine (to taste) while still warm, heat will evaporate alcohol. Let cool. Add walnuts. Store in an airtight container. Can be made up to 2 days ahead.
