I've always loved this recipe, but I've always felt the package ranch dressing was too salty. I decided to make a homemade ranch dressing to give this salad a fresh taste. I like this salad even more with this change to the recipe. I hope you do too.

    large or 2 small cloves of garlic
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp
  • 1/4 c
  • 3 Tbsp
  • 1 Tbsp
    fresh dill
  • 1 tsp
    fresh oregano
  • 1 tsp
    fresh tarragon
  • 2
  • 1 tsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp
    paprika, sweet mild
  • 1/2 tsp
    cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2-3
    dashes tabasco (optional)
  • 1 c
  • 1/2 c
    sour cream
  • 1 c
  • 1 tsp
    white wine vinegar

  • 1 bag(s)
    cheese tortellini cooked and cooled
  • 1 c
    ham (julienned)
  • 1 c
    pea pods (lighly steamed)
  • 3/4 c
    swiss cheese (cubed)
  • 2
    scallions (minced)
  • 1/4 c
    red bell pepper (minced)
  • 2 c
    homemade ranch dressing

How to Make Creamy Tortellini Salad


  1. Finely mince the garlic and then add the salt and mash it into a paste.
  2. Finely mince all the fresh herbs.
  3. Combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, add the minced herbs and garlic. Add the milk to thin the dressing.
  4. Add the remaining ingredients. You can adjust the taste to your preference by adding more vinegar, paprika, cayenne or Worcestershire to your liking.
  5. Cook tortellini according to package directions and cool.
  6. Add ham, swiss cheese, pea pods, scallion and red bell pepper to the tortellini.
  7. Add ranch dressing and combine all ingredients. Add more buttermilk if the dressing is too thick.
  8. This salad tastes the best after it has been allowed to sit for several hours.
