When it comes to ham salad this is top of the list for me....I love this version and ever since I tried some at a local Amish store I had to learn how to make it. It is a simple recipe and can be seasoned up if you want. I have altered a recipe I found in an Amish newspaper and my main addition is the horsey sauce, which I love. My 16 yr old nephew Rhyan just loved his ham salad sammie today. I hope you enjoy it too.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound chopped ham, strips or small cubes
  • 3/4 pound baby swiss, finely shredded (i like horseradish cheese too)
  • 1 1/2 - 2 cups sauerkraut, rinsed and drained
  • 1 tablespoon dill weed
  • 2 - 3 teaspoons caraway seeds
  • 2 - 4 tablespoons horseradish sauce (depending on taste)
  • 1/3 - 1/2 cup mayonnaise dressing
  • - salt & pepper to taste

How To Make amish ham salad

  • Step 1
Shredding the baby swiss cheese, chop the ham and rinse/drain the sauerkraut really well. I usually squeeze the kraut with my hands to get the most liquid out as possible.
  • Step 2
Add all your ingredients in a bowl and stir together till well combined.
  • Step 3
This is the horsey sauce that I use. It most certainly has a bite to it.
  • Step 4
    Salad is ready
  • Step 5
    Sammie with Amish Ham Salad
  • Step 6
I used my Grammie's Homemade Mayonnaise recipe for this and it paired well with the ham and swiss. https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/sauce-spread/dressing/homemade-mayonnaise.html?p=1
