This was the one thing I thought we HAD to have on Thanksgiving and Christmas. You know, the one food as a child you think "makes" the meal. Since my daddy's death in 2006 I don't make it any longer. We now have pistachio fruit salad (new traditions). I've heard this referred to as Ambrosia and other things such as mayonnaise or whipping cream added, but this is the ONLY way I ever made it.

Ingredients

  • 2 - red apples
  • 2 - green apples
  • 2 - oranges
  • 3 - tangerines
  • 1 cup purple or green seedless grapes (cut in fourths)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 - bag miniature marshmallows
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
  • 1 - bag frozen coconut
  • 1 1/2 - bananas

How To Make fruit salad

  • Step 1
Chop all the fruit (I leave the peels on the apples for color) all the fruit needs to be in small bite size pieces. Leave Bananas for last.
  • Step 2
Mix all the fruit together (except bananas), add the sweetened condensed milk, coconut, pecans, marshmallows. This is best if you make it the day before and let it "cure" in the refrigerator, it makes the marshmallows softer.
  • Step 3
I add the bananas right before I am ready to serve so they don't get brown. My family treats this as dessert! On Thanksgiving it's the one thing you come back and eat in a cup a couple hours after everything else in your system has settled ;-)
