This recipe, using fresh from the garden vegetables is a must for those who practice food storage (canning, freezing). It's simple, easy and it freezes well. Our family prefers this served while still partially frozen.

4 lbs. green cabbage
1 green pepper
1 carrot
1 onion
1 Tbs. canning salt
2 C. sugar
1 C. cider vinegar
1/2 C. water
1 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. mustard seed

How to Make Russ's Cole Slaw (Freezer Cabbage)


  • 1Chop or shred cabbage. Chop green pepper. Shred carrot and onion. Mix vegetables. In a large mixing bowl, sprinkle vegetables with salt and mix well. Cover with food wrap and set aside.
  • 2In a medium pan, mix together sugar, vinegar, water, celery seed, and mustard seed. Boil mixture for one minute.

    Set aside, let cool one hour.
  • 3Mix syrup with vegetables
    Place in containers (plastic freezer bag) and freeze.
