"Since making my Lavender and Lemon Pound Cake, I've been intrigued by the idea of using herbs in simple cakes. Pumpkin and sage are a wonderful savory combination, so I wondered what they woudl taste like together in a sweet form. I was very please with the result—a more interesting and sophisticated pumpkin cake, for sure. finish off slices with some maple syrup-sweetened creme fraiche. INGREDIENTS
3⁄4 cup (1 1⁄2 sticks) unsalted butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh sage leaves
1 cup packed light brown sugar
2 1⁄2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin purée
2 teaspoons baking powder
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped walnuts
