Updated on Feb 19, 2011

I found this recipe in a womans life magazine 3 years ago and haven't used anything else since. My Husband is a mechanic for a road construction company and has GREASY, DIRTY clothes. this works great on them. I see there is another soap on the site. Mine is different so thought I would reintroduce it. This detergent does not make suds, so don't be alarmed. Also good for the new HE washers. With this recipe you might want to eliminate the use of laundry softener even.

Ingredients

  • LIQUID LAUNDRY DETERGENT
  • 3 pints water
  • 1/3 - bar fels naptha soap, grated
  • 1/2 cup washing soda (arm and hammer, not baking soda though)
  • 1/2 cup 20 mule team borax
  • 2 gallons bucket to mix it in
  • 1 quart hot water
  • POWDERED LAUNDRY DETERGENT
  • 1 cup fels naptha soap
  • 1/2 cup washing soda
  • 1/2 cup 20 mule team borax

How To Make homemade laundry soap (liquid and powdered)

  • Step 1
Mix grated Fels Napth soap in a saucepan with 3 pints hot water and heat on low until dissolved. Sitr in Washing Soda and Borax. Stir until it slightly thickens, and remove from heat. Add 1 quart hot water to the 2 gallon bucket. Add soap mixture, and mix well. Fill bucket with additional hot water to make 2 gallons and mix well. Set aside for 24 hours until mixture thickens. I try and stir it once and awhile. If you don't by the next day it is like jello and you just have to stir until it mixes. (might have to use your hands even). Use 1/2 cup of mixture per load
  • Step 2
For the powdered detergent just mix and store in airtight container. Use 2 tablespoons for light loads and 3 tablespoons for heavy loads. to make a large batch- grate 6 bars fels Napth soap and then add 3 cups Washing Soda and 3 cups Borax.
