Ingredients
- MIX IN PAIL IN ORDER GIVEN
- 10 cups water
- 9 cups lard (not hot or tallow)
- 1/2 cup ammonia
- 1/2 cup borax
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 1 can lye (1 1/4 cup bulk lye)
How To Make amish crumbly homemade soap
-
Step 1sprinkle lye in last (very importain) Stir. Let stand 10 minutes, then stir again. Stir frequently for the first 1 1/2 hours. And every hour for the rest of the day. Make sure you have stired all the liquid from the bottom or you will have to stir the next day.
-
Step 2let sit in pail a few days thencover soap and put in a tight fitting container to prevent drying out. The mix may look seperated at first but will eventually absorb and will be beautifully crumbly by stiring. Only make one batch per pail. After a few days you can put in a 5 gallon pail ( with other pails you have made) to cure.
-
Step 3(Meaning of word) Tallow is a rendered form of beef or mutton fat, processed from suet. It is solid at room temperature. Unlike suet, tallow can be stored for extended periods without the need for refrigeration to prevent decomposition, provided it is kept in an airtight container to prevent oxidation.
