Since I live in a heavily wooded area, with rather hard-packed soil, and mostly clay, I have better luck with shrubs than flower gardening. We have cleared many overgrown trees, but over the past 40+ years they have grown tremendously, so there isn't a lot of "full-sun for gardening". I therefore lean towards perennials and shrubs. We also have a brook and the deer jump over it and graze on everything around us. This bush survives with fencing around it from Fall until blooming in the Spring, if the deer don't nibble the buds first!

How To Make lace capped hydrangea - planted in memory of mom

Step 1

Plant it in the Fall, for the following season, surround with taller wire fencing and stakes to hold it in place.

Step 2

If you don't fence it in, the deer will eat the new growth and you won't have blossoms, just leaves! I learned it the hard way, and I didn't have blossoms for three years!
