Most cooks would probably agree that the worst thing about cooking with onions is having smelly hands after handling them. Simple washing with soap and water doesn't seem to help much. It often takes up to 24 hours to get rid of that smell. Here is a quick and easy remedy that has been tried and tested--by me.

Ingredients

  • 1 or more - onions of any type
  • 1 - cold running water
  • 1 - stainless steel knife
  • 1 pinch lemon juice

How To Make cure for "onion hands"

  • Step 1
First wash your hands with soap and water (can't hurt, right?).
  • Step 2
After peeling, chopping, dicing, slicing onions--in other words, when you are all finished handling them--turn on the cold water tap, as cold as you can stand it. Run your hands under the water.
  • Step 3
Under the running water, take any stainless steel kitchen knife and run the blunt end of the blade along and between your fingers, being VERY CAREFUL not to cut yourself. Be slow and gentle.
  • Step 4
When the odor is gone, squirt a little lemon juice on your hands and rub it in. This will neutralize any residual odor.
  • Step 5
NOTE: If you don't want to use a knife, you can also try rubbing your hands and fingers along the stainless steel faucet. I have done this and it works.
