Whenever I make this, everyone raves about it. And the leftovers are even better. I've even used the leftovers in taco salad.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground turkey or chicken
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 - 3/4 cups catsup - enough to coat the meat without being too runny
  • 1 tablespoon dijon or honey dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, more or less to taste
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider or rice vinegar
  • - salt & pepper to taste
  • - hamburger buns, whole wheat
  • - sliced reduced-fat american cheese (optional)

How To Make sloppy joes

  • Step 1
Brown meat in skillet sprayed with non-stick spray over medium-high heat. Break up meat with spatula while cooking so you don't end up with huge chunks of meat. Add chopped onion when meat is about 1/2 way browned. Saute until onions are translucent. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Step 2
Add catsup, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, paprika, cumin, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce and vinegar, Stir to coat meat. Add salt and pepper to taste. TASTE to make sure it's not too sweet or too tart.
  • Step 3
Let simmer for a few minutes to combine flavors. Serve on buns with sliced cheese if desired.
