My wife and I aren't fond of the ketchup-based sauce in most Sloppy Joes. I came up with this recipe because we ARE very fond of Sloppy Joe kind of sandwiches. I've got nothing against ketchup. I just don't want a ketchup sandwich with a little meat added in.

Ingredients For sloppy joshes

  • 1 1/4 lb
    lean ground beef
  • 1 sm
    onion, diced
  • 1 md
    bell pepper, diced
  • 15 oz
    tomato sauce
  • 1 Tbsp
    brown sugar
  • 1 - 2 Tbsp
    minced garlic
  • 1 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 2 - 3 Tbsp
    ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    pepper
  • 1/2 c
    shredded carrots
  • 1 Tbsp
    Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground mustard
  • 1/4 tsp
    black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp
    vegetable oil

How To Make sloppy joshes

    Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the ground beef and season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for 10 minutes or until brown and crumbly. Drain off any grease.

    Add onion, bell pepper, carrots, and minced garlic. Cook and stir until vegetables have begun to soften, about 5 minutes.

    Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and tomato sauce.

    Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until sauce has thickened, 30-40 minutes.
