My wife and I aren't fond of the ketchup-based sauce in most Sloppy Joes. I came up with this recipe because we ARE very fond of Sloppy Joe kind of sandwiches. I've got nothing against ketchup. I just don't want a ketchup sandwich with a little meat added in.

method Stove Top

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 medium bell pepper, diced
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 - 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 - 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

How To Make sloppy joshes

  • Step 1
Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the ground beef and season with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Cook for 10 minutes or until brown and crumbly. Drain off any grease.
  • Step 2
Add onion, bell pepper, carrots, and minced garlic. Cook and stir until vegetables have begun to soften, about 5 minutes.
  • Step 3
Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and tomato sauce.
  • Step 4
Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until sauce has thickened, 30-40 minutes.
