1/2 lb
lean ground beef
1/2 lb
breakfast sausage
1/4 medium
yellow onion, diced
2 clove
garlic, minced
1/4 medium
green bell pepper, seeded and diced
1 Tbsp
tomato paste
1 tsp
chili powder
1 tsp
ground cumin
1 tsp
ground mustard powder
1/2 tsp
salt, kosher variety, or to taste
8 oz
tomato sauce
1/4 c
filtered water
2 Tbsp
apple cider vinegar
1 Tbsp
worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp
dark brown sugar


6 oz
sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
6 slice
good firm bread
4 Tbsp

How to Make Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese Sandwich


  • 3Gather your ingredients.
  • 4Add the ground beef, sausage, and onion to a skillet over medium heat.
  • 5Cook until the onions begin to soften, and the protein has almost cooked, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  • 6Chef’s Note: Use a wooden spoon to break the meat into small pieces.
  • 7Drain off any excess grease.
  • 8Add the green bell pepper, and garlic.
  • 9Cook until the garlic is fragrant, about 1 minute.
  • 10Add the tomato paste, and stir to incorporate.
  • 11Add the remainder of the ingredients
  • 12Stir to thoroughly combine.
  • 13Allow the mixture to lightly simmer until the sauce begins to reduce and thicken, about 20 to 30 minutes.
  • 14Remove from heat, and allow it to cool.
  • 16Gather your ingredients.
  • 17Brush the mayonnaise on one side of each bread slice.
  • 18Add some of the cheese to one of the slices (the side without the mayo).
  • 19Add some of the sloppy Joe mix on top.
  • 20Add more cheese to the top.
  • 21Finish with the top slice of bread (mayo side out).
  • 22Place the sandwich into a skillet over medium heat.
  • 23Flip after about 90 seconds.
  • 24Continue to flip every 90 seconds until both sides are nice and brown, about 5 or 6 flips.
  • 26Cut on the bias, and serve with your favorite sides. Enjoy.
  • 27Keep the faith, and keep cooking.
