How To Make john’s homemade sloppy joe
-
Step 1Brown ground beef being sure to give the meat time to “brown” (caramelize), not just turn grey. Don’t over stir! Pour off and reserve juices to keep the pan au sec (dry).
-
Step 2Add the diced peppers & onions and sauté until tender. Add garlic just before peppers & onions reach final tenderness.
-
Step 3Coat mixture with spices (cumin, paprika, chili powder & oregano) Stir to make sure spices do not burn.
-
Step 4When spices are aromatic & adhered to the meat, add ketchup, tomato sauce & diced tomatoes. Add reserved juices back in. Add refried beans if using.
-
Step 5Reduce sauce to spooning consistency. Spice up to taste with salt & pepper and tobasco sauce. Serve spooned onto hamburger buns.
