Ingredients
- 8 slices American cheese
- 8 slices bread
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onions
- 4 slices tomatoes, optional
- freshly ground black pepper, to taste (I always use mixed peppercorns)
- 4 tablespoons room temperature butter, or as needed
How To Make grilled cheese sandwich

Step 1Place 2 slices of cheese, overlapping, on 4 pieces of bread and top with onions and tomatoes (if using); season with freshly ground black pepper.

Step 2Place one bread slice on top of each and spread butter on top only, making sure to cover the entire surface.

Step 3Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet lined with foil and transfer under the broiler; toast until golden brown, about 2 minutes.

Step 4Remove from the heat, flip them over and spread butter all the way to the edges.

Step 5Return the sandwiches in the oven and bake under the broiler for 2 minutes as well or until nicely toasted.
