I've been making this for over 30 years. I sometimes do a dinner party with fried rice, stir fry vegetables, gingered chicken and store bought won ton soup.

Ingredients For sweet & sour pork

  • 1 1/2 lb
    boneless pork, cut in 1" cubes
  • 1 can
    20 oz. pineapple chunks in heavy syrup
  • 1/4 c
    brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp
    cornstarch
  • 1/4 c
    white vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp
    soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 3/4 c
    green pepper cut in 1/2" strips
  • 1/4 c
    onions thinly sliced
  • maraschino cherries, for garnish, optional

How To Make sweet & sour pork

  • 1
    Brown pork slowly in a little oil. Add 1/2 cup water, cover and simmer until tender, about 1 hour.

    Drain pineapple, reserving syrup. In a saucepan combine cornstarch and brown sugar. Add reserved syrup, vinegar, soy sauce and salt. Cook stirring constantly over medium heat until thickened.

    Pour over hot pork, let rest 10 minutes.

    Add pineapple chunks, green pepper and onions cook another 5 minutes until peppers are done to your liking.

    Serve with white rice. Cherries are a nice garnish, but are not necessary.
