I've been making this for over 30 years. I sometimes do a dinner party with fried rice, stir fry vegetables, gingered chicken and store bought won ton soup.

prep time 15 Min
cook time 1 Hr 30 Min
method Stove Top
yield 6 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless pork, cut in 1" cubes
  • 1 can 20 oz. pineapple chunks in heavy syrup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup green pepper cut in 1/2" strips
  • 1/4 cup onions thinly sliced
  • - maraschino cherries, for garnish, optional

How To Make sweet & sour pork

  • Step 1
Brown pork slowly in a little oil. Add 1/2 cup water, cover and simmer until tender, about 1 hour.
  • Step 2
Drain pineapple, reserving syrup. In a saucepan combine cornstarch and brown sugar. Add reserved syrup, vinegar, soy sauce and salt. Cook stirring constantly over medium heat until thickened.
  • Step 3
Pour over hot pork, let rest 10 minutes.
  • Step 4
Add pineapple chunks, green pepper and onions cook another 5 minutes until peppers are done to your liking.
  • Step 5
Serve with white rice. Cherries are a nice garnish, but are not necessary.
