savory bean with ham soup
This is basically your typical ham and been soup but with a few additions that just turned up the flavor some. You could make it spicy by adding more cayenne if you would like. I served this with warm buttered cornbread drizzled with maple syrup to contrast the soup flavor. To drink we had a big glass of milk. In my opinion this is an amazing comfort food dinner.

Ingredients
- 1 pound dried northern great bean, rinse, drained and picked over
- 1 ham bone with chunks of meat still on it
- 2 cups ham cut into small chunks
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 4 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
- 2 dashes cayenne pepper (more if you want it spicy)
- 1/4 teaspoon adobo
- 1 medium potato, peeled and cubed
- 2 medium carrots, peeled and cut into chunks or slices
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon chicken base
- salt, to taste
How To Make savory bean with ham soup

Step 1Place beans into a large pot and cover them with 2 1/2 cups of water.

Step 2Bring to a boil and allow it to boil about 2 minutes.

Step 3Remove from heat, cover, and let sit for 1 hour.

Step 4Remove lid and add ham, ham bone, onion, chicken base, adobo, garlic, bay leaf, thyme, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper.

Step 5Bring to a boil.

Step 6Reduce heat to a simmer and let cook for 2 hours.

Step 7Remove ham bone, any fat and cut the meat.

Step 8Add meat, potato, carrots and black pepper to the soup.

Step 9Transfer to crockpot and cook on low 8 hours and then high for 2 hours.

Step 10I serve a bowl of this with warm buttered cornbread drizzled with maple syrup and a big glass of milk.
