This is an old recipe from the 60s. My mother-in-law was Polish and a wonderful cook and she made this (or one similar). I had a good friend was was from Hungary and she made one as well so I combined the two and came up with this one. Hope you enjoy it!

Ingredients

  • 4
    thick pork chops
  • 2 to 3 c
    sauerkraut
  • 4
    tart apples
  • 2
    onions, sliced
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp
    brown sugar
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp
    caraway seeds (optional)
  • dash(es)
    salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 c
    water

How to Make Pork Chops with Kraut

Step-by-Step

  1. Season chops with salt and pepper and brown in a skillet.
  2. Peel and slice apples.
  3. Pour half the sauerkraut (add caraway seeds to sauerkraut) into a oven proof casserole, cover with apples, top with onion slices then the remaining sauerkraut. Sprinkle on the brown sugar.
  4. Arrange chops on top, pour 1/2 cup water into skillet and stir to get all the drippings loose, pour over chops.
  5. Cover and bake in a 350 degree oven for one hour. Remove cover and cook an additional 15 minutes to brown the meat.
