There are many imitations out there, but if it's not deep fried, it's not a Monte Cristo. :)

Blue Ribbon Recipe

Have you ever had this yummy sandwich in a restaurant and wondered how they made it? Penny's version of this sandwich is simple and looks impressive. It's kind of like a donut and sandwich combined into one. The outside of the sandwich is light, sweet, and crispy. A nice contrast to the savory deli meats inside. The smeared jam is like a jelly filling and optional, but highly recommended. Test Kitchen Avatar The Test Kitchen

How to Make Monte Cristo Sandwich

Test Kitchen Tips
We placed toothpicks in the sandwich halves to keep them together while frying. Worked great. Just make sure to remove them before serving.

Step-by-Step

  1. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together to blend well.
  2. Add water to the egg.
  3. Add to the flour mixture.
  4. Mix well.
  5. Assemble sandwiches in this order: bread, turkey, Swiss cheese, bread, ham, American cheese, bread.
  6. Cut in half diagonally.
  7. Dip each sandwich half into the batter.
  8. Deep-fry (oil must cover the sandwich) in oil pre-heated to 360 degrees until golden brown.
  9. Remove from oil to paper towels.
  10. Sprinkle with the powdered sugar.
  11. Serve with warm or room temperature jelly for dipping, if desired.
