This is a recipe we served with ribs and pulled pork sandwiches in my restaurant. These beans can be served as a side dish or a main course. You can also substitute pulled pork for the hamburger. The sauce for these beans is very tasty and makes a really nice BBQ sauce for pork, chicken, beef, shrimp or anything you'd like to use it on. The only thing I recommend is tasting for sweetness. As is, it's very sweet which is what my customers liked.

Ingredients For karen’s bbq baked beans

  • THE MEAT
  • 1 lb
    thick cut bacon
  • 1 lb
    hamburger
  • 2 c
    sweet onion (chopped)
  • 2 clove
    garlic (minced) or 2 tsp minced garlic from jar
  • THE BBQ SAUCE
  • 2 c
    ketchup
  • 1/2 - 1 c
    packed brown sugar (use 1/2 cup to start. taste after adding all ingredients for sauce. adjust sweetness to your preference.)
  • 1/4 c
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 c
    molasses
  • 1/4 c
    dry mustard
  • 1/2 tsp
    black pepper
  • 2 Tbsp
    red wine vinegar
  • 1 bottle
    chili sauce
  • THE BEANS
  • 2 can
    great northern beans drained (15.5 oz)
  • 2 can
    kidney beans drained and rinsed (15.5 oz)
  • 2 can
    lima beans drained (15.5 oz)
  • 2 can
    pork and beans (16 oz)

How To Make karen’s bbq baked beans

    Preheat over to 350 degrees F

    Cut bacon into ½ inch pieces. Fry bacon, hamburger, onion and garlic in a large skillet until hamburger is cooked and onion is tender. Drain off some of the grease as you’re cooking so bacon will cook. When hamburger is fully cooked set aside and begin mixing sauce.

    In a large bowl, mix together ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire, molasses, dry mustard, chili sauce and red wine vinegar.

    Add beans to sauce mixture and stir to thoroughly coat and distribute beans.

    Add burger and bacon to sauce and beans mixture, and combine thoroughly.

    Pour into a large baking dish or roaster, and bake in the oven at 350 F for 1 hour.

    NOTES: When I make this for home, I use 1 can of each of the beans and 2/3 cup brown sugar, and leave everything else as is. I like a bit more juice to my baked beans along with less sweet. I keep the meat as is when I'm going to serve this as a meal/main course. If I’m going to use it as a side then I usually half the meat and make the sauce as is. If you half the sauce and have a lot left over it will become dry and set up like concrete. I even like to double the sauce for home as I like my beans a bit soupy and I really like this sauce.

    SUBSTITUTIONS: You can substitute the beans for any you prefer. You can substitute the ground beef and bacon with ground turkey and turkey bacon, shredded chicken, shredded pork, or anything you'd like.

    THE SAUCE: You can make this sauce separate and use it as a BBQ basting sauce for anything, including shrimp or other seafood. If making the sauce to BBQ with, combine all ingredients in a pan and cook low and slow, stirring, until reduced to your desired thickness. I usually cook it at a low boil for about 30 minutes.
