  • 1 1/2 pounds ham steaks, cut 1" thick
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 teaspoons instant coffee
  • 1 cup boiling water

How To Make ham steak with red eye gravy

  • Step 1
Trim off fat from ham and dice the fat (use butter if there is no fat). Cook fat until you get 2 tablespoons drippings, discard solids. In small bowl combine sugar and cloves, rub into both sides of ham steak. Add to skillet and cook until brown (approximately 2 minutes). Keep warm (cover with foil). In measuring cup, dissolve coffee in boiling water, add to skillet and cook about 10 minutes. (Must be syrupy.) Pour gravy over ham and serve.
