I am truly a pinch of this and a dash of that kind of cook. I can't remember the last time I followed a recipe to the letter! I've been making this loaf for almost 20 years and just recently had to write it out for the first time. Therefore, I thought I would share it! The sauce makes this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1 pound ground ham
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 - egg
  • 1 teaspoon each, salt and pepper
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup tomato juice
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vinegar (white or apple cider)

How To Make ham loaf

  • Step 1
    Mix together ground meats, bread crumbs, egg, salt and pepper and milk. Form loaf and place in large loaf pan. Bake uncovered at 350 for 1 hour.
  • Step 2
    After one hour of baking, pour tomato juice over loaf and continue baking an addional 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Step 3
    Combine brown sugar, dry mustard, water and vinegar in sauce pan. Bring to a boil and reduce to simmer until sugar dissolves. Pour over loaf after removing from oven.
