Tomato soup and my grandma were a couple. It seems like she started every recipe with a can of tomato soup.
We always had a huge lunch on Sundays and it was usually a ham, so grandma, grandpa and the great-aunts would have have ham for their sandwiches for their lunch boxes. Sliced luncheon meats weren't as common in those days.
Grandma would make ham sandwiches on Sunday evening and pour tomato soup over the top. Yum...
Butter bread generously, add sliced ham and top with hot tomato soup.
I learned when I was grown that this is a specialty in the Buffalo area. Area restaurants serve a similar sandwich, the tomato soup is flavored with cloves. This must have been my grandma's take on the local sandwich.
