I conjured this recipe up years ago in honor of Notre Dame football and the famous tailgate parties. You can do this on the grill or in the oven. Either way, these sandwiches are to die for! With football season coming, I definitely will have to dust off this recipe.

  • 1 pound swiss cheese slices
  • 1 pound cheddar cheese, sliced
  • 1 jar vlasic kosher dill stackers
  • - dijon mustard
  • 8 - pepperidge farm onion sandwich buns with poppy seeds
  • - aluminum foil

How To Make ellen's tailgater hot ham & cheese

  • Step 1
Tear 8 12-inch squares of aluminum foil and place a bun bottom in the center of each. Place about 4 ounces of ham on each bun.
  • Step 2
Place 2 ounces of Swiss and 2 ounces of cheddar cheese on top of ham.
  • Step 3
Lay two dill stackers on top of cheese.
  • Step 4
Apply generous amount of Dijon mustard to the cut side of bun tops and place bun top over sandwich, pressing down firmly.
  • Step 5
Bring sides of aluminum foil up and over, covering the entire sandwich and pinching to seal.
  • Step 6
Place the foil packs on a large cookie sheet and bake in a preheated 400-degree oven for 10 minutes. Serve immediately and enjoy! You may also place on a hot grill for 15 minutes or so if cooking outdoors.
  • Step 7
Serve with chips, potato salad, soup, whatever strikes your fancy. These are especially good on a crisp autumn day!
