Dee Dee's Pasta Italiano

Diane Atherton

While I know it's easy to open up a can or jar of marinara sauce, I love making my own and the taste just can't be beat. I use this sauce for spaghetti, lasagna and now in this dish.

Not sure when I discovered my love for Italian cuisine (it's been a long time ago) but I think I could be very happy eating this comfort food everyday!

Hope you enjoy as much as we do.

How to Make Dee Dee's Pasta Italiano

  1. Remove casings from sausage, break sausage up and brown in a skillet; set aside.
  2. SAUCE:
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper and garlic; saute until tender; add mushrooms and saute for another minute.
  3. Add red pepper flakes, fennel seeds, tomatoes, tomato paste, water, basil, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt and pepper; stir. Bring to a slow boil, reduce heat slighly and let simmer for 15 minutes covered. Remove lid; add sausage and simmer another 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to thicken.
  4. Remove from heat and serve over hot pasta. I served with fresh homemade rolls hot out of the oven and fried green beans as a side. Hope you enjoy!
