While I know it's easy to open up a can or jar of marinara sauce, I love making my own and the taste just can't be beat. I use this sauce for spaghetti, lasagna and now in this dish. Not sure when I discovered my love for Italian cuisine (it's been a long time ago) but I think I could be very happy eating this comfort food everyday! Hope you enjoy as much as we do.

Ingredients

  • 1 - (19 oz) package johnsonville mild italian sausage
  • 1 - (1-lb) box penne pasta, cooked to directions
  • MARINARA SAUCE
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, extra virgin
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 large bell pepper, chopped
  • 4 cloves garic, minced (can use jarred minced garlic)
  • 1 - (16-oz) package fresh mushrooms, sliced (i have used canned)
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 3 - (14.5-oz) cans diced tomatoes and juice
  • 1 - (6-oz) can tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped (or a couple of tsp dried)
  • 2 teaspoons italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • - salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

How To Make dee dee's pasta italiano

  • Step 1
    Remove casings from sausage, break sausage up and brown in a skillet; set aside.
  • Step 2
    SAUCE: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper and garlic; saute until tender; add mushrooms and saute for another minute.
  • Step 3
    Add red pepper flakes, fennel seeds, tomatoes, tomato paste, water, basil, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt and pepper; stir. Bring to a slow boil, reduce heat slighly and let simmer for 15 minutes covered. Remove lid; add sausage and simmer another 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to thicken.
  • Step 4
    Remove from heat and serve over hot pasta. I served with fresh homemade rolls hot out of the oven and fried green beans as a side. Hope you enjoy!
