This recipe originally came from my mother, as most recipes I use have. Some people think that making your own marinara sauce is daunting, but it's soooo easy and it makes all the difference in this recipe to use a freshly made sauce versus a canned variety! Look for my "Mmmarinara Sauce" recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound cooked ziti (or penne) pasta, cooked al dente
  • 3 1/2 cups mmmarinara sauce (see recipe, or use pre-made)
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese, divided
  • 1/4 cup grated romano cheese
  • 1 pound fresh mozzarella (1/2 lb cubed, 1/2 lb sliced)
  • 2 dashes black pepper
  • 1 pinch crushed red pepper

How To Make zippy baked ziti

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Step 2
    In a large bowl, toss cooked pasta with the Mmmarinara sauce, 1/4 cup of the Parmesan, all of the Romano, and the mozzarella cubes.
  • Step 3
    Season with the red pepper and black pepper to taste. Mix well.
  • Step 4
    Transfer the pasta mix into an oiled 9x13 inch baking dish. Cover the top of the pasta with the mozzarella slices, and sprinkle the remaining Parmesan on top.
  • Step 5
    Bake until lightly browned, approximately 30 minutes.
