1 Hr
Stove Top

Add to Grocery List

1 large
onion, chopped
1 Tbsp
olive oil
2 Tbsp
butter (not margarine)
1 Tbsp
garlic, minced
6 oz
tomato paste
1 1/2 Tbsp
basil, dried (or a large handful of fresh basil)
1 1/2 tsp
1/4 tsp
black pepper
1 Tbsp
1/4 tsp
red pepper flakes
4 - 28 oz
canned whole tomatoes

How to Make Marinara Sauce

  • 1In a large stock pot over medium heat, add butter and olive oil. Add chopped onion (I puree my sauce at the end so I don't worry about big chunks) cook and stir til translucent
  • 2Add remaining ingredients (garlic, herbs and tomato)
Stir together and add 1 of the 28oz cans of water to the sauce.
  • 3With a stick blender, blend to your desired consistency. My daughter hates chunks so mine is always well pureed. If you don't have a stick blender, you can alternately blend your sauce in a blender - carefully....
  • 4Bring to bubbly, slightly cover pot and simmer for at least 30 minutes. I actually simmer most of the day . When I make meatballs (recipe coming), I simmer them in the sauce all day.
