Delicious marinara sauce for all your favorite pasta dishes

prep time 20 Min
cook time 1 Hr
method Stove Top
yield Makes enough for 2 meals - depending on how "saucy" you like it

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter (not margarine)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons basil, dried (or a large handful of fresh basil)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 4 - 28 ounces canned whole tomatoes

How To Make marinara sauce

  • Step 1
In a large stock pot over medium heat, add butter and olive oil. Add chopped onion (I puree my sauce at the end so I don't worry about big chunks) cook and stir til translucent
  • Step 2
Add remaining ingredients (garlic, herbs and tomato) Stir together and add 1 of the 28oz cans of water to the sauce.
  • Step 3
With a stick blender, blend to your desired consistency. My daughter hates chunks so mine is always well pureed. If you don't have a stick blender, you can alternately blend your sauce in a blender - carefully....
  • Step 4
Bring to bubbly, slightly cover pot and simmer for at least 30 minutes. I actually simmer most of the day . When I make meatballs (recipe coming), I simmer them in the sauce all day.
