my fiance' and family love mac & cheese. I got so tired of paying $6-$8 for a block of velveeta that i learned to make this instead. It tastes better and it's less expensive.

butter (no margarine)
1/4 c
flour, all-purpose
4 c
milk, preheated
1 tsp
prepared mustard
1 tsp
1 lb
macaroni, cooked al dente
1 lb
sharp cheddar cheese (yellow), shredded
bread crumbs

How to Make Macaroni & Cheese (no velveeta please)


  • 1Preheat oven to 350F.
  • 2Melt butter in a large saucepan, stir in flour until smooth.
  • 3Cook, stirring over low heat for 3 minutes.
  • 4Gradually whisk in hot milk until smooth and continue to cook until it boils.
  • 5Lower heat and cook until thick and smooth (about 10 minutes).
  • 6Season with mustard, salt and pepper.
  • 7In a greased (or cooking sprayed) casserole dish, combine pasta, 3 cups of cheese and sauce; mix well.
  • 8Sprinkle with 1 cup of cheese and bread crumbs.
  • 9Bake for about 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
