my fiance' and family love mac & cheese. I got so tired of paying $6-$8 for a block of velveeta that i learned to make this instead. It tastes better and it's less expensive.

  • 4 Tbsp
    butter (no margarine)
  • 1/4 c
    flour, all-purpose
  • 4 c
    milk, preheated
  • 1 tsp
    prepared mustard
  • 1 tsp
  • 1 lb
    macaroni, cooked al dente
  • 1 lb
    sharp cheddar cheese (yellow), shredded
  • ·
    bread crumbs

How to Make Macaroni & Cheese (no velveeta please)


  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Melt butter in a large saucepan, stir in flour until smooth.
  3. Cook, stirring over low heat for 3 minutes.
  4. Gradually whisk in hot milk until smooth and continue to cook until it boils.
  5. Lower heat and cook until thick and smooth (about 10 minutes).
  6. Season with mustard, salt and pepper.
  7. In a greased (or cooking sprayed) casserole dish, combine pasta, 3 cups of cheese and sauce; mix well.
  8. Sprinkle with 1 cup of cheese and bread crumbs.
  9. Bake for about 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
