macaroni & cheese (no velveeta please)

my fiance' and family love mac & cheese. I got so tired of paying $6-$8 for a block of velveeta that i learned to make this instead. It tastes better and it's less expensive.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter (no margarine)
  • 1/4 cup flour, all-purpose
  • 4 cups milk, preheated
  • 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound macaroni, cooked al dente
  • 1 pound sharp cheddar cheese (yellow), shredded
  • - bread crumbs

How To Make macaroni & cheese (no velveeta please)

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350F.
  • Step 2
    Melt butter in a large saucepan, stir in flour until smooth.
  • Step 3
    Cook, stirring over low heat for 3 minutes.
  • Step 4
    Gradually whisk in hot milk until smooth and continue to cook until it boils.
  • Step 5
    Lower heat and cook until thick and smooth (about 10 minutes).
  • Step 6
    Season with mustard, salt and pepper.
  • Step 7
    In a greased (or cooking sprayed) casserole dish, combine pasta, 3 cups of cheese and sauce; mix well.
  • Step 8
    Sprinkle with 1 cup of cheese and bread crumbs.
  • Step 9
    Bake for about 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
