My favorite of comfort foods - Macaroni and Cheese! This recipe is classic, and quite simple. But not short on flavor. It does have a little "kick" to it with the addition of cayenne pepper. But feel free to lessen, or omit it all together if you'd like.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound elbow macaroni (i used large elbows)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 8 ounces shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • TOPPING
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

How To Make homestyle baked mac & cheese

  • Step 1
    Cook your pasta and set aside (keep warm).
  • Step 2
    Over a low-medium heat on stove top, melt your butter.
  • Step 3
    Whisk in your flour, a little at a time.
  • Step 4
    Then, slowly add in the milk. Continue to whisk until creamy. Allow to cook for about 5 minutes.
  • Step 5
    Next - add in your black pepper, red pepper, and salt.
  • Step 6
    Stir in half of your cheddar cheese.
  • Step 7
    Fold in the cooked pasta to your cheese mixture.
  • Step 8
    Pour in to a 3 quart lightly greased baking pan.
  • Step 9
    Melt the butter in a saute pan and toss the bread crumbs to coat.
  • Step 10
    Top the macaroni with the remaining cup of cheddar cheese and bread crumbs.
  • Step 11
    Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.
