Years ago in the 70's my Italian neighbor loaned me her cookbook of favorite recipes that were lovingly compiled by another Italian family. I searched the cookbook until I found this Spaghetti Sauce recipe that looked easy and did not have to cook all day. I thought that I would try it just for the heck of it. All I can say is that it was a huge success with my family and I have been making it ever since. Hopefully you will find it interesting enough to try like I did and also have success with your family.

  • 3 lg
    garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-4oz. can
    mushrooms, drained
  • 1/4 tsp
    red pepper flakes
  • 1 lb
    ground beef
  • 1 large can
whole tomatoes, 1 lb. 12 oz. size can (puréed)
  • 6 oz
    tomato paste
  • 1 tsp
    salt or to taste
  • I/8 tsp
    pepper or to taste
  • 1 tsp
    italian seasoning, optional

How To Make simple homemade spaghetti sauce

  • 1
Place olive oil in a 3 quart sauce pan and heat oil over medium heat.
  • 2
Add minced garlic to oil and stir for a few seconds keeping careful not to scorch or burn garlic.
  • 3
Add mushrooms and red pepper flakes and blend well.
  • 4
Add ground beef and break up a bit. Cover and cook for 10 minutes.
  • 5
Uncover, stir breaking up large clumps until beef is no longer pink.
  • 6
Purée tomatoes and add to meat mixture.
  • 7
Blend mixture well, cover and simmer for 1 & 1/2 hours.
  • 8
Uncover and add tomato paste blending well.
  • 9
At this point you add the seasonings. The recipe does not call for Italian Seasoning so I put that it is optional but I have used it with great success. Once the seasoning has been added, taste and add more if you prefer. Blend well. Simmer uncovered for 1/2 to 1 hour. Serve over Spaghetti and sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese if desired.
