A wonderful comfort food. You can add chopped ham and peas, too! Cut down on the cooking time by using a can of evaporated milk for the milk.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups elbow macaroni, cooked
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 10 ounces mild cheddar cheese, shredded

How To Make baked macaroni and cheese

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Rinse cooked macaroni with cold water and place in a 3 quart baking dish or 13x9 inch pan.
  • Step 2
    In a saucepan, melt butter and stir in flour. Gradually stir in milk and then add sour cream. Add salt and pepper. Cook over medium heat until sauce bubbles and thickens.
  • Step 3
    Reserve 1 cup of cheddar cheese and add the rest to the sauce, stir into the sauce until melted.
  • Step 4
    Pour sauce over macaroni and mix thoroughly. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. (You could also sprinkle on a little parmesan cheese if you like.)
  • Step 5
    Bake 1 hour, until bubbly and browned.
