baked macaroni and cheese (southern)

This has been passed down from a few friends and the tradition is to credit the person you inherited from. I received it from my friend Becky. Not only is it a hit at pot lucks but also at the dinner table. It makes enough that you can enjoy the leftovers, which are delish!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
  • 1 large loaf of bread, crusty on the ouside, chewy on the inside
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 1 package macaroni, large shells
  • 1 - red onion, chopped

How To Make baked macaroni and cheese (southern)

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2
    Start the pasta boiling (do not rinse when done) Set aside.
  • Step 3
    In a large bowl, combine mayo, sour cream and soup.
  • Step 4
    In a separate bowl, chunk up the bread into bite-sized pieces and toss with the melted butter. Set aside.
  • Step 5
    Add hot pasta and sharp cheddar to the mayo mixture, stirring well. Spread into a greased casserole dish.
  • Step 6
    Top the macaroni and cheese with the buttered bread cubes.
  • Step 7
    Bake for about an hour or until the middle is bubbly. If the bread starts to get too golden before it's done baking, tent with foil.
  • Step 8
    Serve and enjoy! There will be plenty of leftovers, which is the best part!
