This has been passed down from a few friends and the tradition is to credit the person you inherited from. I received it from my friend Becky. Not only is it a hit at pot lucks but also at the dinner table. It makes enough that you can enjoy the leftovers, which are delish!

sharp cheddar cheese

sour cream
1 can(s)
cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1 large
loaf of bread, crusty on the ouside, chewy on the inside
1 c
melted butter
1 pkg
macaroni, large shells
red onion, chopped

How to Make Baked Macaroni and Cheese (Southern)


  • 1Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • 2Start the pasta boiling (do not rinse when done)
    Set aside.
  • 3In a large bowl, combine mayo, sour cream and soup.
  • 4In a separate bowl, chunk up the bread into bite-sized pieces and toss with the melted butter. Set aside.
  • 5Add hot pasta and sharp cheddar to the mayo mixture, stirring well. Spread into a greased casserole dish.
  • 6Top the macaroni and cheese with the buttered bread cubes.
  • 7Bake for about an hour or until the middle is bubbly. If the bread starts to get too golden before it's done baking, tent with foil.
  • 8Serve and enjoy! There will be plenty of leftovers, which is the best part!
