Baked Macaroni and Cheese (Southern)

Wendy York

This has been passed down from a few friends and the tradition is to credit the person you inherited from. I received it from my friend Becky. Not only is it a hit at pot lucks but also at the dinner table. It makes enough that you can enjoy the leftovers, which are delish!

How to Make Baked Macaroni and Cheese (Southern)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Start the pasta boiling (do not rinse when done)
    Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, combine mayo, sour cream and soup.
  4. In a separate bowl, chunk up the bread into bite-sized pieces and toss with the melted butter. Set aside.
  5. Add hot pasta and sharp cheddar to the mayo mixture, stirring well. Spread into a greased casserole dish.
  6. Top the macaroni and cheese with the buttered bread cubes.
  7. Bake for about an hour or until the middle is bubbly. If the bread starts to get too golden before it's done baking, tent with foil.
