This recipe was included in the "Chicken Soup for the Soul Cookbook". Some of you will remember Art Linkletter. This was his recipe. There's quite a story behind it, but not sufficient room to share it here. I will say that during hard times when I was young (right before pay day) we ate this too! It is not fancy, but as Art says, neither is a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk, or a cookie and some lemonade! "Sometimes the simplist things in life are the best, especially (for me) when they bring back wonderful memories." Amen, Art.

How to Make Tomato Mix Up

  1. Open stewed tomatoes and transfer to a large pot or saucepan (not iron). Add a lot of torn up bread pieces or rolls, plus sugar, butter, salt and pepper.
  2. Heat stirring, until the bread has absorbed the juices into big marshmallow-sized chunks, all a beautiful tomato red.
