How to Make Monte Cristo Sandwiches

Step-by-Step

  1. Whisk eggs and milk in shallow dish. Beat butter and prepared mustard in bowl until blended. Spread one side of each slice of bread with the butter mixture. Layer each of the buttered sides of 6 slices of the bread with 1 slice of the cheese, 1 slice of the ham and 1 slice of the cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices buttered side down. Preheat oven to 425. Dip each sandwich in egg mixture. Brown sandwiches on both sides on lightly buttered griddle. You may prepare in advance to this point and store, covered in refrigerator until ready to bake. Arrange sandwiches on baking sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. To serve slice each sandwich diagonally into halves and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Garnish with a spoonful of preserves. Great for a luncheon or committee meeting. Makes 6 sandwiches
