Ingredients

  • 1 - small onion, sliced
  • 2 teaspoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon beef consume concentrate, i use better than bullion
  • 2 cups grated gruyere cheese, lightly packed
  • 4 slices bread
  • 2 teaspoons butter

How To Make french onion grilled cheese sandwich

  • Step 1
    Add oil, onion, and sugar to skillet.
  • Step 2
    Cook over low to med low heat until onion begins to caramelize. Stir frequently. Approximately 20 minutes.
  • Step 3
    Once onion begins to caramelize, add beef concentrate and water. Cook until water evaporates and remove from skillet.
  • Step 4
    Butter bread and place two pieces butter side down in skillet.
  • Step 5
    Spread half of the cheese on the bread.
  • Step 6
    Top with half of the onions.
  • Step 7
    Add the rest of the cheese and top with the other two pieces of buttered bread.
  • Step 8
    Grill on medium to medium low until golden brown on one side.
  • Step 9
    Flip and grill until other side is golden brown.
