  • 1 medium
    onion chopped
  • 1 medium
    tomato chopped
  • ·
    1 inch piece of ginger
  • 6 clove
  • 1 small
    green chili seeded and chopped
  • 1/2 c
    tomato sauce
  • 3 Tbsp
    olive oil
  • 2
    bay leaves
  • 2 Tbsp
    brown sugar
  • 1 tsp
    each chili powder, ground coriander, & garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp
    each turmeric powder and fenugreek powder
  • 15 oz
    can of chickpeas
  • ·
    salt to taste
  • ·
    cilantro for garnish
  • ·
    basmati rice and naan for serving

How to Make Chana Masala


  1. Place the onion, tomato, ginger, garlic and green chili pepper into a food processor. Process until well incorporated. Remove and stir in the tomato sauce.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet. Add the bay leaves and cook 30 seconds. Add the tomato sauce mixture and cook until the oil begins to separate from the mixture. Add all the seasonings and cook 3 minutes. Add the can of undrained chickpeas. Simmer 5 minutes. Taste and adjust for salt. Serve garnished with cilantro.
